Abe to Visit Washington

This week, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit Washington to meet with President Barack Obama for the first time in each of their new administrations. It is anticipated that during this visit, both leaders will voice their commitment to a strong bilateral relationship and to the U.S.- Japan alliance. The Summit meeting is an opportunity not only to discuss priorities to maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, but also plant the seeds for a personal relationship. Since 2006, Japan has had six different Prime Ministers, making personal relationships with the Obama administration difficult to establish. Advancing the policies and priorities that will have a lasting impact on the region and bilateral relationship will depend on mutual trust that evolves over time through frequent interactions.

CULCON and JUSFC have been and will continue to promote opportunities for Japanese and Americans to learn about each other through educational and cultural exchanges.  When students study together, compete in athletics together, or share cultural experiences, they establish a bond of friendship that can be enduring. People-to-people exchanges at all levels encourage the knowledge and trust necessary to grow the U.S.-Japan relationship. The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Mourns Loss of Donald Richie

The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission mourns the loss of Donald Richie, a Tokyo-based expert on Japanese cinema who wrote dozens of books and articles about the country’s people and culture who died on Tuesday, February 19.   Richie reviewed Japanese films and the arts for more than 50 years.  Richie wrote books on two of Japan’s best known filmmakers, Yasujiro Ozu and Akira Kurosawa, as well as general guides to Japanese cinema. He also wrote about his travels in Japan.  Richie, from Lima, Ohio, came to Japan in 1947 during the American occupation. He also served for several years as a film curator at the New York Museum of Modern Art.

Elizabeth Dowd, JUSFC Creative Artist Fellow- ’92-’93. The Noh Training Project at the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, now in its 19th year, is  accepting registrations for NTP 2013 – July 15th-August 3rd.  Discover the stillness, power, and economy of Noh during NTP’s  three-week, performance-based training intensive. Culminating in a final public recital, NTP offers classes in shimai (dance), utai (chant) and the four instruments of Noh: the otsuzumi (hip drum), kotsuzumi (shoulder drum), taiko (stick drum) and nohkan (flute). Under the Direction of Noh expert, Richard Emmert and Master Teacher and Noh actor, Akira Matsui, NTP has earned its reputation as the most intensive training in Noh available outside of Japan.
