About the NichiBei Creative Artists Program

Since 1978, the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (JUSFC) and the National Endowment for the Arts (the Arts Endowment) have worked with the Government of Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkacho) and the International House of Japan (IHJ) to organize the U.S.-Japan Creative Artists Fellowship Program. In summer 2019, JUSFC and the Arts Endowment selected five U.S.-Japan artistic teams for the 2019-2020 U.S.-Japan Creative Artists Fellowship Program. Each team is collaborating on a project that reflects the themes of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The completed artistic works will be showcased in Tokyo in summer 2020. This is the first time since the program’s inception that artists were selected as a U.S.-Japan team to produce a joint work to present to the public. This collaborative team approach reflects the spirit of unity that animates the Games, and highlights the enduring partnership between Japan and the United States.

日米友好基金と全米芸術基金は 1978年より日本の文化庁 及び国際文化会館（I-House）の協力を得て、日米芸術家 交換プログラムを運営しています。2019年夏には、 2019-2020年の日米芸術家交換プログラムの為、米国人と 日本人からなる５組のアーティストチームを選出しました。そ れぞれのチームはオリンピック・パラリンピックのテーマを反 映したプロジェクトに取り組み、完成作品を大会開催期間中 に東京で展示・上演する予定です。日米のアーティストがチー ムとして選出されるのは、プロジェクト始まって以来のことで、 かれらの示すアプローチはオリンピックを盛り上げる団結の精 神と、日米の揺るぎない友好関係を浮き彫りにすることでしょう。

About the projects

Gene Coleman with Adam Vidiksis, Sansuzu Tsuruzawa and Akikazu Nakamura

This collaborative project combines Japanese martial arts, one of the earliest art forms, with music, video, motion-sensor technologies, and other digital media. This U.S.-Japan team will use digital technologies to translate martial arts movements into sounds, which will then form a landscape over which musicians will play. 米国で最も古くから知られている日本文化の一つ、武道を、音楽、映像、モーションセンサー他、様々なデジタル技術と組み合わせるコラボ プロジェクト。空手の動きをデジタル技術で音楽に変換し、それをもとに演奏を構築します。

Cameron McKinney with Toru Shimazaki 

This U.S.-Japan collaboration will produce an original contemporary dance work for a binational ensemble comprising performers from Shimazaki’s Dance Barbizon and McKinney’s Kizuna Dance. The dance piece will incorporate the personal stories of Japanese and American dancers, and portray the bonds of friendship and commonality of cultures.  島﨑氏のDance Barbizonとマッキニー氏のKizuna Danceのダンサーで編成されるアンサンブルによる、新作コンテンポラリーダンス。日 米ダンサーそれぞれの個人的な身体史を取り入れながら、友情の絆と異文化間に流れる共感を描く。

Sue Mark and Bruce Douglas (marksearch) with Hiroyuki Abe and Natsuka Endo

This U.S.-Japan artistic team of two couples have completed the creation of mobile sound memorials from recorded Fukushima Disaster survivor stories. These ‘sonic haiku’ about adaptation, hope and the meaning of home form memorials modeled after Tohoku disaster monuments (seki hi). In recognition of the ongoing and challenging pandemic times, this interactive installation invites the public to share stories for their growing soundscape. Participants are encouraged to respond to these questions with sound, video, text or drawings:  二組の夫妻デュオによる2011年東日本大震災を巡る詩的探究。移動式の執筆部屋を作り、様々な地域で希望を伝える俳句を集めていく。執筆 部屋では福島の若者の声なき声を拡声すべく、視覚と音を使った俳句のインスタレーションも行う。

Jesse Schlesinger with Masayo Funakoshi

This U.S.-Japan partnership will create an installation and performance-based work. The project explores sustainability through the lens of food and agriculture presented within an architectural installation serving as a temporary, experimental, and functional restaurant.  インスタレーションとパフォーマンスをベースとした作品。実験的かつ実用的なレストランを仮設して、食と農業のサステナビリティを考察する。

Benjamin Volta with Cho Kuwakado and Yasuyuki Sakura

This U.S.-Japan team is engaging youth in the United States and Japan to create public artwork. The project draws inspiration from the accomplishments of distinguished Japanese and Americans in sports, science, and education. These accomplishments will inspire youth to create individual works of art that will make up the larger piece. 日米の子供たちによるパブリック・アート。両国の著名なアスリート、科学者、教育者の功績にインスピレーションを得て、子供たちにそれぞ れ作品を描いてもらい、大きな共同作品にまとめる。アート、発明、スポーツが持つ世界の未来を変える力を示す。
