How to Apply for an Institutional Grant

Application Timeline and Submission

 Application Deadline: Applications must be submitted annually by 5:00 p.m. EDT on July 1st

  • Submission Method: Electronic submission through the Submittable portal only (Link activated annually on May 1st)
  • Decision Timeline: Grant decisions are made in September at JUSFC’s Grantmaking Meetings

Note: JUSFC makes all funding decisions in accordance with these Grantmaking Guidelines and Procedures consistent with the provisions of EO 14332.

Required Application Materials:

  • Core Documents
  •  Supporting Materials (optional)
    • Organizational information and IRS determination letter
    • Background and explanatory material to support project design, budget request and statements made in the application narrative
    • Letters of support (when relevant to project success)
    • Previous project reports (if applicable)
  •  Project Narrative Structure
    • The narrative must address:
  • Mission Alignment
    • How the project contributes to raising awareness about U.S.-Japan relationship importance
    • Specific contributions to cultivating/maintaining knowledge of Japan in the United States
    • For transnational projects: how the project specifically addresses U.S.-Japan relations
  •  Implementation and Impact
    • What is the project’s potential for medium/long-term impact or awareness about Japan?
    • How does the applicant plan to monitor and share program progress?
    • Methodology and approach for achieving stated objectives
    • Timeline and key milestones
  •  Sustainability and Leverage
    • Has the applicant sought other funding?
    • Plans for project continuation beyond JUSFC grant period
    • Are the project coordinators able to maintain the project after the JUSFC grant ends?
