October 17 U.S./October 18 Japan, 2021 Opening Event Features U.S.-Japan Artists Benjamin Volta and the Chara Rimpa Project with Japan-United States Friendship Commission & Panasonic Center Tokyo Leaders

The U.S.-Japan Creative Artists team of Benjamin Volta and Oita-based Chara Rimpa Project will be featured guests of the Panasonic Center Tokyo (PCT) at an opening ceremony and press event on October 17, 2021, in the United States, October 18, 2021 in Japan.

The event will take place from 9:30 p.m. to 10:40 p.m. (EDT) 10:30 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. (JST) at the Panasonic Center Tokyo 3-5-1 Ariake, Koto-ku, Tokyo to celebrate the U.S.-Japan Creative Artists Fellowship Program, a joint program of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (JUSFC) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

Attendees in person and by Zoom webinar will learn about NichiBei Kids Public Art Project: United by Emotions, an interactive collaborative art project created through the fellowship program.  As part of this special partnership highlighting U.S.-Japan artistic collaboration, Philadelphia-based muralist Ben Volta and Oita-based artists, the Chara Rimpa Project (Cho Kuwakado and Yasuyuki Sakura) worked as a team with youth in the United States and Japan on a project that has culminated in a beautiful collaborative public work of art. This jointly designed three-dimensional art will be displayed at the Panasonic Center Tokyo from October 19, 2021 to March 27, 2022.

The artists have been working together since 2020 to create a public mural that reflects the themes of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The artwork is the result of hundreds of drawings created through workshops at Bache-Martin Elementary School in Philadelphia; and children and youth at the Lumbini Kindergarten and the Tsuruoka Children’s Club in Saiki.

Attendees on October 18 will be welcomed by PCT Director Alex Ikenouchi and will hear remarks from Philip Roskamp, Minister-Counselor for Public Affairs Embassy of the United States in Japan, and Paige Cottingham-Streater, Executive Director of JUSFC. They will also learn about the project from the artists, Benjamin Volta (by video from the United States) and Cho Kuwakado (in person).

Mr. Volta and Mr. Kuwakado will be available for after the opening ceremony for on-site media interviews in English and in Japanese.

About the Japan-United States Friendship Commission:  JUSFC was established as an independent federal government agency by the United States Congress (P.L. 94-118)  in 1975 to strengthen the U.S.-Japan relationship through educational, cultural, and intellectual exchange. 2021年10月18日（米国では10月17日）、日米友好基金（JUSFC）と全米芸術基金（NEA）が共催する「日米芸術家交換プログラム」の展示を記念した、オープニング・イベントが、午前10:30 から 11:40（米国時間午後 9:30 から10:40）、パナソニックセンター東京（東京都江東区有明3-5-1）にて開催され、アーティストのベン・ヴォルタと大分を拠点とするキャラリンパ・プロジェクトの桑門超が登壇いたします。

今回同センターにて発表されるのは、日米の芸術的コラボレーションに焦点を当てた、日米キッズ・パブリックアートプロジェクト『United by Emotions』です。フィラデルフィアを拠点とするベン・ヴォルタ氏と、キャラリンパ・プロジェクト（桑門超氏と佐倉康之氏）は、日米の子どもたちと共にパブリックアート作品を制作するプロジェクトを行いました。この子どもたちのデザインをもとに作られた壁画および立体作品が、2021年10月19日から2022年3月27日まで、パナソニックセンター東京で展示されます。

アーティストらは2020年よりオリンピック・パラリンピックのテーマを反映した作品に取り組んでおり、壁画はフィラデルフィアのバーチェ・マーティン小学校や、佐伯市のルンビニ幼稚園およびつるおか児童クラブの子どもたちとのワークショップで作成された100枚のドローイングをもとに制作されました。

当日は、PCT所長の池之内章氏の挨拶に続き、在日米国大使館広報・文化交流担当公使フィリップ・ロスカンプ氏、JUSFC専務理事ペイジ・コッティンガム＝ストリーター氏からのメッセージもいただきます。またベン・ヴォルタ氏は米国よりオンラインで、桑門超氏は会場にて現
地登壇し、日本語および英語で質疑応答にお応えいたします。質疑応答はセレモニー終了後、現地参加の場合のみ可能ですのでご了承ください。
